Remember the Commute

Regardless of how perfect a home you are interested in seems, your joy in the home can be greatly diminished if you are stuck for hours in traffic to and from home each day. In the early stages, you might consider it a chance to relax or enjoy some alone time, but eventually, it will become the nightmare that stands between you getting to and from home.  

To avoid this, try to find a home that is within a reasonable distance from your place of employment. If your partner works in an opposite direction, consider splitting the commute distance.  

Be Realistic About Buying a Fixer Upper

A fixer upper seems like a great way to add personal touches to your new home and save money, but if you do not have the time and money to dedicate to the project, you could be left with an unfinished home that has greatly depleted your resources. You can buy a fixer upper, but you need to be realistic about what you can devote physically and financially to fixing it up. 

A good way to get a serious assessment of the job ahead of you is to consult with your real estate agent and the contractor. A real estate agent can help you make common sense decisions about what renovations you should make to improve the resale value of the home. The contractor can help you determine what it will take to make those changes.  

Be Decisive

At various points throughout the home buying process, you will be called upon to make decisions. Unfortunately, if you take too long to make a decision, you could delay the purchase of a home and possibly end up spending far more than you wanted.
